‘CHRISTMAS AT SPURRIERGATE’ - 2013
An Exhibition of paintings and prints
AT THE SPURRIERGATE CENTRE,
Spurriergate (bottom of Coney Street) York - 7th Dec to 1st February
This exhibition comes from my love of remote Scottish Islands, my passion for the sea, wild places, creation and The Creator. In 1955 aged 11, I made my first trip to the Isle of Skye on Scotland’s wild west coast and the love affair began. Lindisfarne in my home county of Northumberland is a loved location too. Many years later and my passion still burns brightly. Just spent the week before last 8 metres from the sea at breezy Burnmouth north of Berwick.
I like to think I capture, something of the atmosphere and mystery of these far flung places, echoing the sublime of the Romantic Artists with their love of “turbulent nature”. Working in my studio from copious sketches made on location, I hope my paintings and prints are non the less evocative, retaining a great sense of ‘place’. I have been revisiting many of these sketches over the last nine years since discovering printmaking. No not just a glorified photocopies, but original etchings lino prints and collagraphs, which I have individually hand printed on my traditional etching press.
