‘THE ROAD TO THE ISLES’
Skye, Muck, Harris, Isle Ewe and The Summer Isles
An Exhibition of paintings and prints in York Hospital Main Corridor
Continues until November 2013
This exhibition comes from my love of remote Scottish Islands, my passion for the sea, wild places, creation and The Creator. In 1955 aged 11, I made my first trip to the Isle of Skye on Scotland’s wild west coast and the love affair began. Later that year I discovered the books of naturalist Fraser Darling and I was hooked - ‘Island Years’, about expeditions to remote, Hebridean islands in the 1930’s - ‘Island Farm’, about his time farming in the remote north west of Scotland on The Summer Isles. So my dreaming of islands began. Amazingly, 46 years later in 2001, following major surgery for a life threatening illness, when my island forays seemed over, my childhood dream of visiting The Summer Isles was fulfilled. Journeying north I stayed in the very cottage perched high on the cliffs on tiny Tanera Mor where ‘Island Farm’ was written!
I like to think I capture, something of the atmosphere and mystery of these far flung places, echoing the sublime of the of Romantic Artists with their love of “turbulent nature”. Working in my studio from copious sketches made on location, I hope my paintings and prints are non the less evocative, retaining a great sense of ‘place’. I have been revisiting many of these sketches over the last nine years since discovering printmaking.
